ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrive Broome
Arrive in Broome and be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy your day at leisure to explore this fascinating place. Head to the Sunset Bar and Grill at your resort to see one of Australia’s best sunsets over Cable Beach. This evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner before your journey commences.

Day 2 Gibb River Road - Windjana Gorge - Tunnel Creek
Your day starts with a visit to the fascinating Boab Prison Tree. Believed to be more than 1,500 years old and measuring an incredible 14 metres in diameter, this remarkable tree was once used by early police patrols as a standing point for prisoners as they were walked to Derby. Today, the hollow tree is a registered Indigenous site of great cultural significance. Continue your journey along the Gibb River Road, a remote 660-kilometre outback highway stretching between Broome and Kununurra. The ‘Gibb’ traverses the wild heart of the Kimberley, passing spectacular landscapes of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges, deep rock pools and spectacular waterfalls. Turn off to Bandilngan Windjana Gorge National Park to visit Windjana Gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above glistening white sands. Admire the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls and scour the banks for freshwater crocodiles. Continue on to Dimalurru Tunnel Creek National Park and explore Tunnel Creek. With torch in hand, wade through the cool waters that fill the tunnel and emerge on the other side to the sight of a tranquil and stunning oasis. Later, arrive at Fitzroy Crossing.

Day 3 Geikie Gorge, Halls Creek, Purnululu National Park
Travel to Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park and explore magnificent Geikie Gorge. Flooding of the river has bleached the walls white over time – an intriguing sight that makes it popular with photographers. Board a unique cruise along the stunning gorge and learn more about the beautiful flora and fauna of this spectacular region. Enjoy a visit to Halls Creek, before travelling to the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. Experience the first of three APT exclusive Wilderness Lodges as you settle into the tranquil ambience of the Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, located in the heart of this stunning national park. Enjoy a delicious dinner with your fellow guests tonight.

Day 4 Purnululu National Park, Piccaninny Creek, Cathedral Gorge
Signature Experience: After a day’s exploration of the Bungle Bungle Range, enjoy drinks as the sun sets over the striking beehive domes.

Explore the magic of Purnululu National Park for yourself and discover the depth of the Bungle Bungle Range. The park is home to the famed black and orange striped domes, ascending to 578 metres above sea level. Standing over a grass-covered plain, steep cliffs form the western face. Created by the constant erosion of river movements over a staggering 20 million years, the range has both geological and Indigenous cultural significance. It is an imposing sight and one that you are sure to remember forever. Take a walk along Piccaninny Creek, a winding gorge within the unique orange and black striped domes. Marvel at the majestic beehive domes as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. Your next stop is the natural amphitheatre of Cathedral Gorge, a spacious cavern where the acoustics are astounding. You may like to experience an optional scenic helicopter flight over the domes (own expense). This evening, enjoy drinks as the sun sets over the striking dome formations of the iconic Bungle Bungle massif.

Day 5 Echidna Chasm, Kununurra
Join a hike with your Driver-Guide along a Livistona palm-fringed trail into Echidna Chasm, a spectacular natural cleft in the rock. Farewell the Bungle Bungle Range and travel along the Spring Creek Track through glorious rugged red landscapes to Kununurra, the gateway to the eastern Kimberley and the home of the Ord River Scheme, which is one of Australia’s greatest engineering feats.

Day 6 Lake Argyle, Ord River, Kununurra
Travel to the majestic Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere. Join an unforgettable wildlife cruise on the mighty Ord River. From a modern shaded vessel, discover a fascinating ecological system that has developed from the damming of the Ord River at two locations. Later, enjoy sunset while cruising on Lake Kununurra. This evening enjoy dinner and relax within the surrounds of your hotel.

Day 7 Parry’s Lagoon, Wyndham, El Questro
Visit the serene Parry’s Lagoon, where you may see an array of birdlife. Head to Wyndham and view the breathtaking Cambridge Gulf from the spectacular Five Rivers Lookout. Enjoy lunch before arriving at El Questro, which covers a staggering 700,000 acres. Afterwards, make your way to Emma Gorge Resort, where you will enjoy dinner this evening.

Day 8 El Questro, Home Valley Station
Signature Experience: Soak in the delectable hot pools of Zebedee Springs and leave feeling revitalised.

After a hearty breakfast, continue to explore remarkable El Questro before enjoying lunch. Hike to the picturesque Emma Gorge and be rewarded with a revitalising swim beneath a towering droplet waterfall. Cross the mighty Pentecost River into iconic Home Valley Station, an immense cattle property. Discover the spellbinding scenery that captivated audiences in Baz Luhrmann’s movie ‘Australia’, including the imposing yet strikingly beautiful Cockburn Range. At the viewing area, you will savour this inspirational setting with sunset drinks, as you gaze out to the ever-changing colours of the Cockburn Range as the sun retreats.

Day 9 Gibb River Road, Mitchell Plateau
Back on the Gibb River Road, ford the mighty Durack River, then turn off and travel north on the Kalumburu Road towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau. Along the way, stop at Drysdale River Station for lunch. Afterwards, enter a remote world of Livistona palm forests, beautiful lookouts, magnificent waterfalls and isolated swimming holes. For the next two nights, experience APT’s Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge, with its impressive Ungolan Pavilion. In the heart of the Mitchell Plateau, your accommodation is perfectly positioned beside the Pandanus palm-fringed Camp Creek, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip. Perhaps unwind as the sun sets, then later this evening, be treated to a tantalising dinner that showcases the region’s finest local produce. For the perfect accompaniment to your meal, a election of flavoursome beers from Matso’s Broome Brewery and wines from Rosabrook Estate are available for purchase.

Day 10 Mitchell Falls
Signature Experience: Take a breathtaking helicopter flight over spectacular Mitchell Falls.

Today you have a full day to discover the beauty of Mitchell Falls, with its magnificent tiered waterfalls and Indigenous rock art. When available, local Indigenous guides will join the adventure, imparting their knowledge of the area and sharing their cultural beliefs. Begin with a guided hike to Little Mertens Falls to view rarely seen rock art. Continue to Big Mertens Falls before arriving at the incredible Mitchell Falls. Enjoy the superb scenery as you swim in the pools above the falls, spotting some of the region’s abundant wildlife. Take an included helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls and the surrounding wilderness back to your 4WD vehicle (or if you prefer, hike back with your guide). Longer helicopter flights over this captivating and remote coastline are available at an additional expense. Later, it’s time to return to your wilderness lodge to relax, and enjoy a gourmet dinner. After dinner, spend some time in the lounge recounting today’s tales.

Day 11 Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) Rock Art, King Edward River, Drysdale River Station
Signature Experience: Visit Wandjina and Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) rock art galleries.

The Kimberley’s rock art is arguably some of the world’s oldest, with evidence suggesting the earliest occupation in the region dates back 50,000 to 60,000 years. Admire fascinating rock art and swim in the clear waters at King Edward River. Cross the beautiful Drysdale River and arrive at Drysdale River Station, where you will enjoy a unique stay at this historic cattle property, including a delicious dinner.

Day 12 Manning Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Gibb River Road
Travel through the heart of Kimberley cattle country to discover some of the region’s most secluded and beautiful gorges. At Manning Gorge, you’ll enjoy lunch in the shade of boab trees. Look out for the region’s bird life and enjoy a refreshing swim in the pristine water under paperbarks. Continue to Galvans Gorge. Here a short walk leads to a picturesque waterhole where boab trees cling to the escarpment above and you can take a leisurely swim. Later, arrive at Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge in time for dinner, which will become your home for the next two nights. This remarkable lodge is situated in an enviable position, with a sprawling lawn to relax and unwind, while offering stunning views of the King Leopold Range.

Day 13 Bell Gorge
Back on the Gibb River Road, travel to Bell Gorge, where spectacular cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Sitting approximately 300 metres above sea level, Bell Gorge is an idyllic natural spot for swimming and photography. Here you can also enjoy a spot of bird-watching. Should you be feeling particularly energetic, you may take the opportunity to hike to the lower pool of the gorge and enjoy a relaxing dip below the cascading waterfall.

Day 14 King Leopold Range, Derby, Broome
Back on the Gibb River Road, travel through the Wilinggin King Leopold Range Conservation Park to Derby, where you will visit the Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre. Your magnificent 4WD adventure through the Kimberley draws to a conclusion, as you return to Broome’s Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa. Later this evening, perhaps enjoy a drink before a special Farewell Dinner at your resort. There is no better setting to bid farewell to your Driver-Guide and new-found friends as you recount the amazing adventure you have all shared.
